The Ordinary bicycle was prone to accidents especially when the front wheel had a sudden encounter with an obstacle. Some manufactures offered a design with rake to the front fork (the Xtra ) that would position the rider back of the center of gravity while others placed the small wheel to the front (the Star and Eagle) preventing a sudden flight over the handle bar (1878 - 1892). Other makers offered a smaller front wheel driven and geared up by chains (the Kangaroo) or levers (the Facile). These were referred to as Dwarf safeties (1880 - 1886)
