ABOUT

Welcome to the Velocipede Gallery. Here you will find images, historic information, and anecdotes following the development of the pedal bicycle from the first velocipede patent in 1866 to the modern safety bicycle of 1900.

Most of the cycles pictured in the Gallery are my personal effort to collect and chronicle the evolution of early bicycle design. The focus are the years 1865 to 1905. The Industrial Revolution was at its peak. In that four decade span of time, one of mankind's greatest aids to personal freedom and mobility appeared, evolved, and changed the way we moved.

Here is a glimpse of some of those early machines when men and women  invented, refined, raced, rode, and loved bicycling.

The love affair rolls on.
