The Star Bicycle Lamp - Zacharias & Smith - Newark New Jersey - Circa 1886

Every good bicycle needs a decent lamp for night riding. The Star was no exception. The configuration of the driving wheel to the rear on a Star did not lend itself to the use of a hub lamp, the usual solution for night riding on a high bicycle. Instead the Star Lamp was mounted to the steering column which attached to the front fork over the front wheel. This Star Lamp is a substantial box oil lamp and must have given off a fair amount of light. This lamp was offered in the mid 1880's and replaced by an improved version of the Star Bicycle Lamp in 1889. To my knowledge, at this time, there are only two of these lamps that are known to have survived.
